Description
Heritage
Mongolian scimitars have a long history, with early Mongols using Khitan long knives and later Genghis Khan being exposed to Arab scimitars in his trades with West Asia. Combining the strength advantages of the Arabian scimitar, the heaviness of the Khitan long knife and the sharpness of the Song people’s Pu knife, the Aja Wusi of the Wanggu Department introduced the heat treatment technology of the Han people to create the Mongolian scimitar. On the basis of the traditional Mongolian scimitar craft, Longquan sword craftsmen integrate their own unique forging skills and styles, making the Mongolian scimitars produced in Longquan unique.
Crafting process
Hand forging: Longquan craftsmen use the traditional hand-forging process to heat the high-quality steel to high temperature, and through repeated hammering, the steel material is more dense and uniform, remove impurities, enhance the strength and toughness of the knife body, and form a unique forging texture at the same time.
Heat treatment: The use of quenching, tempering and other heat treatment processes, precise control of temperature and cooling rate, so that the blade to obtain a good balance of hardness and toughness. Some may also use the earth-covered burning edge process, so that the blade forms a high-hardness martensitic structure, and the back of the knife retains good toughness, while producing a beautiful burn line.
Fine grinding: After multiple grinding processes, the knife body is ground from coarse to fine using grinding stones with different mesh numbers, so that the surface of the knife body is smooth as a mirror, and the blade is extremely sharp, clearly showing the forging texture and burnt edge pattern.
Design
Blade: The blade is curved, the arc is smooth and natural, and the blade length is generally about 30 cm to 60 cm. The blade is gradually narrowed from the root to the tip, the widest part of the blade is usually close to the blade, and the thickness is also gradually thinner from the root to the tip, and the cross-section is diamond-shaped or similar, making the knife more light and flexible when wielding, which is convenient for force and cutting.
Shank: Shaped to fit the hand hold, slightly wider at both ends and slightly thinner in the middle, ergonomic. Some shanks will have metal fittings at the end, such as copper or silver shanks, to decorate and balance the blade.
Scabbard: Matches the blade and may have delicate carvings, inlays, and other decorations on the surface. Common decorative elements include dragon patterns, cloud patterns, flowers and other traditional patterns, and some will be integrated into Mongolian characteristics of horse heads, yurts and other elements, the use of technology including relief, carving, etc., so that the scabbard has high artistic value.
Functional use
Collection value: Due to its exquisite handicraft, unique historical and cultural connotation and artistic beauty, it has become a collection favored by many sword collectors, and has a certain collection and investment value.
Decorative use: It can be used for home decoration, office display or display in museums, exhibition halls and other places, adding a unique cultural atmosphere and artistic atmosphere to the space, and highlighting the love and taste of traditional culture.
Cultural significance: As an important symbol of Mongolian culture, Longquan hand-forged Mongolian scimitar carries the history, tradition and spirit of the Mongolian people, and is also the embodiment of national cultural exchanges and integration, which helps to inherit and carry forward the Mongolian and Chinese traditional sword culture.
