Description

Crafting process
Material selection: Patterned steel is an ideal material for making eight-sided Spring and Autumn Han swords, which are usually composed of several steels with different carbon contents, which are folded and forged to fuse with each other, so as to obtain a sword body with both hardness and toughness.
forging
Blanking: The selected steel is heated to a high temperature to make it plastic, and then repeatedly beaten with a sledgehammer to shape the steel into the general shape of the sword, a process that requires the experience and strength of the blacksmith to ensure that the basic shape and density of the sword embryo are uniform.
Folding and forging: The sword embryo is folded repeatedly, and then forged after each folding, so that the internal structure of the steel is more dense, the impurities are extruded, and at the same time, different steels are fused with each other to form a unique pattern. This process needs to be repeated many times, such as the usual 12, 100 or even more folds and forgings, to achieve the desired performance and pattern effect.
heat treatment
Quenching: The forged sword body is heated to a suitable temperature, and then quickly put it into water or oil to cool, and the tissue structure of the sword body changes through rapid cooling, thereby improving the hardness and strength. However, the quenching process requires strict control of temperature and cooling rate, otherwise it is easy to cause cracking or deformation of the sword body.
Tempering: The quenched sword body has high hardness but poor toughness, and is easy to brittle, so it needs to be tempered. The sword body is heated to a lower temperature again, and the temperature is kept warm for a period of time and then slowly cooled to eliminate the quenching stress, improve the toughness of the sword body, and make the sword body achieve a good balance of hardness and toughness.
Grinding: Grinding is a crucial step in bringing out the steel pattern and improving the sharpness of the blade. Generally, it needs to go through multiple grinding processes, from coarse grinding to fine grinding, and then to fine grinding, using grinding tools with different mesh numbers, such as grinding wheels, oil stones, sandpaper, etc., to polish the surface of the sword body smoothly, so that the pattern is clearly visible, and at the same time the blade is sharpened. There are thirteen, sixteen or even more grinding processes that are common, and the sharpened sword body has exquisite patterns and sharp edges.
Exterior features:
Octahedral shape: The sword body is in an eight-sided shape, the eight planes are intertwined with each other, the lines are smooth, from the head of the sword to the tip of the sword gradually tapering, and there is a separate waist design at the tip of the sword, which makes the sword body more three-dimensional and layered, not only beautiful, but also more conducive to stabbing.

Pattern pattern: Due to the use of pattern steel forging, after grinding, the sword body will emerge mysterious and beautiful pattern pattern, such as flowing water pattern, tree heart pattern, etc., these patterns are natural and smooth, unique, each sword pattern is the blacksmith hand-forged art crystallization, increasing the ornamental value and collection value of the sword.
Performance Benefits
Both hardness and toughness: through careful selection of materials, folding and forging, heat treatment and other processes, the sword body of the eight-sided Spring and Autumn Han Sword of patterned steel not only has high hardness, can easily cut hard objects such as iron wires and branches, but also has good toughness, is not easy to break when impacted by external forces, and can withstand greater stress.
High sharpness: After many grinding processes, the blade becomes very sharp, which can achieve the effect of cutting paper like mud, and has a strong lethality on ancient battlefields, and even in modern times, its sharp edge is still its charm for collection and decoration purposes.
