Description

The Russian military knife Chaksi, also known as Chasik, has unique historical, cultural, and craft characteristics. The following is a related introduction:
Historical origin: Chasik originated in the Caucasus region in the 12th and 13th centuries and is a typical representative of Central Asian grassland swords. After the war of Russia’s conquest of the Caucasus from 1850 to 1859, the Russians praised the long knives of the Caucasians endlessly. In the middle of the 19th century, combining the advantages of the French and Caucasian weapons, the Russians created their own saber, the Russian Chasik. In 1881, Alexander III carried out a military knife reform and introduced the 1881 Chasik. In 1882, he began to equip the Russian army on a large scale.
Craft Features
Hand forging: Traditional Chasik military knives use hand forging techniques, where blacksmiths repeatedly pound and fold steel to make their internal structure denser, remove impurities, enhance the strength and toughness of the blade, and give the blade a unique texture. Each hand forged Chasik has uniqueness.
Material selection: In the early days, the material sources of the Chasik military knife were quite diverse, including steel from Russia and materials obtained from countries such as Germany, Austria, and France. Later, a unified material standard gradually emerged, such as high carbon spring steel, which ensured the hardness and elasticity of military knives.
Equipment production: Chasik’s equipment is very exquisite, with most of the handles made of wood and wrapped in keratin protective plates. The handles used by officers are inlaid with silver plates using black enamel technology and decorated with inscriptions, floral patterns, and other decorations. The scabbard is usually made of wood, wrapped in cowhide or canvas, and coated with brown waterproof liquid rubber. The outermost layer is black paint.
Appearance characteristics
Blade: The blade is slightly curved, with a single-sided edge that extends to the tip to form a sharp angle, allowing for both cutting and stabbing. There are usually two shallow wide grooves near the back of the knife, which can reduce the weight of the blade and make it more lightweight and flexible to use.
Knife handle: The handle head of the knife handle adopts a parrot beak shape, which looks like the head of an eagle, which is also one of the reasons why Chasik is known as the “Eagle’s Claw”.
usage
Military application: The 1881 Chasik participated in various large-scale wars in Russia from the late 19th century to the mid-20th century, such as the Russo Japanese War, World War I, the Russian Civil War, World War II, etc. It was both a weapon for resisting foreign enemies and a tool for external expansion. Until the mid-1950s, it was still a military parade weapon of the Soviet Union and was officially retired in 1949.
Collectible value: Nowadays, Chasik has withdrawn from the military stage, but due to its unique historical and craft value, it has become a treasure for museums and knife collectors.
